Is my heat pump's electricity bill too high?
Four numbers, one minute: whether your heat pump uses more electricity than houses like yours, what that costs a year and what you can do.
Verdict
Raised: worth a look
48 % above the usual range
- Implied efficiency 2.03, promised 3.50
- Up to 468 € a year, 2,340 € over five years, if settings are the cause
- Within the warranty the installer bears the remedy
- First step: a letter requesting an operating check, ready in the report
Heatproof is independent of manufacturers and installers. This verdict rests on your entries and on typical values; it replaces neither a measurement on site nor legal advice.
Where every number comes from9
Your electricity use9,600 kWh MeasuredYour electricity bill or the heat pump's own meter · A dedicated meter for the heat pump makes it exact; a household meter includes the rest of the house.
Heated area160 m² MeasuredYour input · Living area from the building documents.
Heating demand14,976 to 19,968 kWh EstimatedTypical value for the building's age class × area (dena, Verbraucherzentrale) · The energy certificate or heat-load calculation replaces the typical value; a connected heat meter measures it.
Weather factor of the billing period×1.04 Calculated3,386 degree days in Berlin against 3,247 on average over the previous ten years (Open-Meteo, ERA5/ERA5-Land (Copernicus); GeoNames) · The factor raises or lowers the usual range, so a cold winter does not look like a defect.
Hot water2,000 kWh Estimated12.5 kWh per m² per year, the German building-code reference · The system's own counters show the real hot-water share.
Usual efficiency (COP)2.7 to 3.3 ComparedField tests in existing houses (Fraunhofer ISE) and 139 heat-metered homes (HeatpumpMonitor.org, CC BY 4.0) · The system's own efficiency comes from the device counters or the sensor kit.
Usual electricity use5,144 to 8,136 kWh CalculatedHeating demand plus hot water, divided by the usual efficiency · With a measured heat demand the range halves.
Implied efficiency of your system2.03 EstimatedEstimated heat demand divided by your electricity use · Only a measurement on the system turns this into a reliable number.
Promised efficiency3.50 MeasuredYour quote or subsidy application · The promise is the yardstick for a defect notice.
Measured: a meter reading or your input. Calculated: from measured numbers with a published formula. Compared: against heat-metered homes or field tests. Estimated: from typical values, about ±25 %.
What this check cannot know4
- Whether the cause is a setting, the sizing, usage or the device. That needs the system's data or a visit.
- Whether the system is getting worse over the winters. That needs two winters of measurement.
- How much other appliances on the same bill account for, if the heat pump has no meter of its own.
- Whether the area and age class describe the house well; a renovated old house needs less than its year suggests.
